Bedford County is located in the Piedmont Region of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seated comfortably at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The County is home to an abundance of natural beauty and historical sites, structures, and scenic tourist attractions including Virginia's largest lake, Smith Mountain Lake.
Nestled at the foothills of the Peaks of Otter, the County Administration building is located at 122 East Main Street, Bedford VA 24523, across from the Bedford Courthouse. The County Administration building is the key hub for many governmental functions including Economic Development, Commissioner of Revenue, Community Development (Planning & Zoning, Permits, Natural Resources, Geographic Information's Systems, Building Inspections), the Cooperative Extension, Treasurer and where members of the County Board of Supervisors continue to serve the public.
Bedford County is part of the Lynchburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Bedford's population was nearly 70,000. The county population has nearly doubled since 1980.
