The Bedford County Department of Community Development seeks to develop viable communities by promoting integratedMap Button 1 (3) approaches that provide decent housing,  are environmentally conscious and provide suitable living environments and for both area residents and wildlife. The primary means towards this end is the development of partnerships among all levels of government and the private sector, including for-profit and non-profit organizations.

    The Building Inspection office is responsible for ensuring public health, safety & welfare associated with the design, construction & utilization of public and private buildings. County inspectors inspect all buildings under construction for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

    Geographic Information System

    The Bedford County Department of Geographic Information Systems is designed to allow residents and professionals to view many layers of geographic information, including tax, assessment, zoning, utilities, school, political, topography and public safety. Our maps incorporates information from Bedford County and the Town of Bedford, and replaces each of these localities' earlier GIS sites.

    Natural Resources

    The Division of Natural Resources is responsible for organizing, coordinating and implementing all programs dealing with natural resources in Bedford County, primarily soil, water, forestry, agriculture, open space, shoreline and flood protection. The Division issues Land Disturbing Permits for development, which involves oversight of plan review, administration, enforcement and stormwater management based on the guidelines prescribed in the Commonwealth of Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Law and Regulations as well as the Bedford County Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance.

    Boards & Commissions

    The Planning Commission is comprised of seven residents, with one appointed from each of the seven election districts within the County. The duties and functions of the Bedford County Planning Commission are to promote the orderly development of the County and its environs. The Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors. The duties of the Planning Commission are prescribed under Section 15.2-2210 of the Code of Virginia.

    Bedford County Board of Zoning Appeals (or BZA) is comprised of seven citizens appointed for the seven voting districts in the County. The composition of the Board of Zoning Appeals is established under, Section 15.2-2308 of the Code of Virginia. The powers and duties of the BZA are specifically assigned under Section 15.2-2309 of the Code of Virginia County inspectors inspect all buildings under construction for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
