Candidate must be available to work extensive after hours and fulfill on-call responsibilities

Description

Responsible for supervising and conducting investigations of fire and explosion incidents, post incident witness and suspect interviews; presentations of finding in civil and criminal proceedings, either individually or as a team member, in compliance with the Bedford County and Virginia Code. Shall prepare detailed investigative reports; provide detailed information and opinion on matters of fire prevention and safety. Shall be responsible for overall operation of the fire marshal's office (FMO) and the supervision of employees and volunteers. Shall serve as the designated fire official, conduct inspections, supervise and manage inspection processes and enforce applicable provisions of Statewide Fire Prevention Code. Will serve as an agency spokesperson as necessary. Will facilitate presentations and training to the public as needed. Will teach relevant sections of Fire Fighter I / II and other internal and external courses as needed. At the request of the Director of Community Development, may serve on the Technical Review Committee; making recommendations for plan review and site assessment. Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Fire and Rescue.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements Include:

  • Valid Virginia driver's license

  • Hold VDFP 1033 Fire Investigator and 1031 Fire Inspector certifications and shall maintain state certification in each by completing all required in-service training.

  • High School diploma with post-graduate education in a related field

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Image Trend, other related computer applications; as well as the use of applicable office equipment.

Preferred Experience includes:

  • BHCD certification as a Fire Prevention Inspector

  • Completion of VDFP Firefighter II, Hazmat Operations, EVOC and Fire Instructor II

  • Possess or obtain training in the field of post blast investigations

  • Completion of the VDFP/VFMA Law Enforcement School

  • Certification as an IAAI Fire Investigation Technician, IAAI Certified Fire Investigator or NAFI Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator
