Tri-County Lakes Administrative Commission (TLAC) - Smith Mountain Lake Summer Vessel Pump Out Program

Various; Seasonal – Spring through Fall, hours will include weekends and holidays.


Operates a vessel pump out boat and/or truck; offloads sewage from vessel holding tanks; transports sewage to a land-based holding tank; gathers specific information from vessel owners and enters into a daily log; informs boaters on where and how to report observed pollution problems; the importance of proper disposal of sewage, and how to protect the lake’s water quality.


Minimum Requirements Include:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with marina owners, other employees, and the general public.Ability to discuss marine pollution, importance of sewage disposal, and public health consequences with boaters.
  • Requires operation of machines, motor vehicles and/or equipment. Must possess valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Heavy work requiring ability to move objects up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions.
  • Vocal communication required for expressing / exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing required to perceive information at normal spoken word level; visual acuity required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving observation of general surroundings and activities.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions; subject to inside / outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and/or heat, noise, vibrations, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.May be exposed to blood borne pathogens and infectious agents.May be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend County, State, and Federal policies, procedures and programs of limited scope and difficulty.
