Description

The Background Investigator / Administrative Associate is responsible for conducting and compiling professional background investigations for candidates under consideration for hire within the Sheriff’s Office. Position performs administrative functions with considerable independent judgement. Excellent customer service skills are exercised to assist a wide range of people including employees and citizens. This position is under the general supervision and direction of the Sergeant within the Professional Standards Unit of the Sheriff’s Office.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements Include:

  • Any combination of experience, education, and training equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Two years’ experience in law enforcement, public administration, or professional level human resources.
  • Knowledge of investigation and interviewing techniques; Civil, Traffic, and Criminal laws; law enforcement needs and demands; and Human Resources theories, principles, and practices.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications with ability to comprehend, interpret, analyze and make inferences from complex written documents and oral communications.
  • Physically capable of operating a vehicle safely and possession of a valid Virginia operator's license.
  • Must be able to travel by airline and vehicle as required to fulfill the needs of the position.
  • If not formerly or currently Law Enforcement Certified by Virginia DCJS, the employee will be required to obtain and maintain Virginia DCJS certification as 1) Armed Special Conservator of the Peace (SCOP) with subsequent appointment by the Bedford County Circuit Court; or 2) Virginia DCJS certification as a Level 2 Auxiliary Police Officer. The SCOP or Level 2 Auxiliary Officer shall not be permitted to carry or use a firearm while serving as such unless such officer has met the firearms training requirements established in accordance with in-service training standards for law enforcement officers as prescribed by the Criminal Justice Services Board.

     

    Preferred Experience includes:

     

  • Law enforcement experience as a Peace Officer or investigative experience
