This position is designated as Essential Personnel in accordance with Bedford County’s personnel policy. The

E-911 Director will be expected to report to work, unless otherwise directed by management, regardless of weather conditions.

 Description

 Responsible for oversight / management of the Communication Center’s 25 staff members and its extensive array of sophisticated communication hardware / software technology. Oversees a comprehensive upgrade of hardware / software including a new CAD/RMS system. Performs complex administrative, technical, and professional tasks in overseeing all facets of the Communication Center. Manages all work schedules, ensures satisfactory staffing, and is intricately familiar with the internal operations of the center. Manages various operating systems including CAD, RMS, E-911 telephone network, mapping system and other programs utilized in the day to day operations. Serves as Bedford County’s representative on the Region 2000 Radio Communications Board.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements Include:

  • Associates degree in business, public administration, emergency management, or related field.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods / techniques utilized in operating various communication systems
  • Proficient knowledge of computer technology and various office software applications
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a diverse, professional, team environment and to build and maintain effective, productive relationships with multiple safety-service agencies

    Preferred Experience includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in emergency management
  • Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Basic Tele-Communication Course
  • PCO EMA Certification
  • APCO Fire Service Communications Course
  • APCO Communications Center Supervisor Course
  • Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Basic Dispatch Certification
  • Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) Certification
  • IS100, IS200, and IS700 National Incident Management System (NIMS) training
  • Harris Corporation P25 Radio System Administration Training
  • ENP (Emergency Number Professional) Certification and/or APCO RPL (Registered Public Safety Leader)
