Post Date:02/21/2020 3:49 PM

The CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) has arrived in Bedford County.  NHANES is an annual survey of the nation’s health status – and Bedford County is one of several counties selected to participate this year.  The survey is unique in that it combines interviews and physical examinations.

Personnel will be conducting the survey in Bedford County starting February 19, 2020 through April 23, 2020. A sample of about 686 people from Bedford County will be asked to participate in the survey. Interviewers will be knocking on the doors of randomly selected households throughout the county. They will conduct a brief questionnaire at the doorstep in order to obtain demographic information used to identify sample participants for the survey.

This is a legitimate survey is a federally funded national effort with significant influence on health policy across the nation.  The interviewers who approach county residents will carry official CDC identification and active duty officers of the US Public Health Service (USPHS) may accompany NHANES field interviewers.

Results of NHANES benefit people in the United States in important ways. Facts about the distribution of health problems and risk factors in the population give researchers important clues to the causes of disease. Information collected from the current survey is compared with information collected in previous surveys. This allows health planners to detect the extent to which various health problems and risk factors have changed in the U.S. population over time. By identifying the health care needs of the population, government agencies and private sector organizations can establish policies and plan research, education, and health promotion programs that help improve present health status and prevent future health problems.

Participation in the survey is by invitation only – but if you are invited, we encourage you to participate! For more information:
