The transfer building at the Bedford County Waste Management Facility will be closed for flooring renovations from Jan. 8–12, 2026.
During this period, small waste loads may be accepted in a designated temporary area within the facility. Please note that space is limited, and large loads may not be accommodated.
Residents are encouraged to postpone bringing waste to the facility until renovations are completed.
Beginning Jan. 4, 2026, the Shady Grove Waste Convenience Center (2544 Jordantown Rd., Vinton) will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
To help prevent illegal dumping, new fencing has recently been installed around the facility.

Bedford County government offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
The Waste Management Facility, gated waste convenience centers, and the Bedford Area Welcome Center will be open.
Delinquent tax bills are being mailed out this month.

Applications for Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled will be accepted from Jan. 1-Feb.28, 2026.
The qualifications are: 1) Total household income cannot exceed $50,000. 2) Net worth cannot exceed $150,000.

Spring sports registration with Bedford County Parks & Recreation is open from Jan. 6-31, 2026.
Spring sports are soccer, baseball, softball, and flag football. Registration fee is $40 per player.

This month, another group of residents living within 500 feet of Smith Mountain Lake or Leesville Lake will receive notices to have their private sewage disposal systems pumped out in 2026.
Supervisors approved the Mandatory Sewage Disposal System Pump-Out program in 2024.

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors will set their 2026 meeting calendar this month.
Their organizational and planning meeting is Jan. 13, 2026, at 7 p.m. At this meeting, Supervisors will also elect a chair and vice-chair.
Organizational meetings for the Planning Commission, Economic Development Authority and Agricultural Economic Development Advisory Board will be held in February.
Bedford County is taking applications for two seats on the Local Board of Building Code Appeals and one seat on the Board of Zoning Appeals.
