Top Bedford County Announcements: February 2026

Virginia’s 4 p.m. Burning Law is in effect from February 15 through April 30.

During this time, open-air burning before 4 p.m. is prohibited if the fire is within 300 feet of wooded areas or dry grass that could carry fire into the woods. Burning is permitted between 4 p.m. and midnight, provided proper precautions are taken and the fire is attended at all times.

Bedford County government offices will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of George Washington Day.

The Waste Management Facility, gated waste collection centers, and the Bedford Area Welcome Center will remain open for normal business hours.

Delinquent tax bills are currently being mailed and are due by February 28, 2026.

Applications for Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled are due by February 28, 2026.

To qualify:

  • Household income must not exceed $50,000
  • Net worth must not exceed $150,000

Join Bedford County Parks & Recreation for Family Bingo Night on Saturday, February 28, from 6:30–8:30 p.m., at the Bedford County Gym (1059 Turning Point Rd., Bedford).

This free event is designed for families with children and offers a chance to win over $300 in prizes.

Late registration for spring sports continues through the first week of February.

Available sports include softball/baseball, soccer, and flag football. The cost is $40 per player, plus a $10 late fee, through February 6.

Local children are invited to participate in the Bedford Public Library System’s Youth Winter Reading Program.

Participants are encouraged to read five books between February 1 and February 28. Reading progress should be recorded on Beanstack. Upon completion, participants will receive a prize voucher for two tickets to the Railyard Dawgs Hockey Game in Roanoke on March 7.
