Copied from another parent - please respond to this ridiculous, unprofessional conduct of the Rec Dept. Long post and I am not one bit sorry for it. Do you often wonder why kids either leave the Bedford Rec, or play for other areas such as Goode or Forest? Let me share with you one reason. Mike is my ex husband and therefore that probably makes me his biggest critic. He is hands down THE best coach in the Rec league, any age group. He is amazing with the kids he coaches. He meets each kid on their own individual level, from highly skilled to anxious and learning a new sport. They all love him. Never has a parent of one of his players complained about him. In the past two years alone, his team lost 1 game total and brought home 2 championships. He is one of the very few coaches in the system that teaches SKILLS to his players. He teaches them sportsmanship, for example, more than once he called a time out when one of players (Ayden once) got a steal and was on a fast break, just to make sure we weren't running the score up. Other games that weren't even close he would only allow the players who hadn't scored that game to shoot. Like any coach that is passionate about the game and their players, he does question refs and can lose his cool. Again, every coach does and no, it doesn't make it always right. He has NEVER yelled at a child on his or any other team. He is not being allowed to coach this year. He was told TODAY, November 12th. This is absolutely absurd. Yes, he had two technicals in one game and had to leave. He served his standard one game suspension and continued the season. I could sit here and rattle off many more Rec coaches that had the same. Several parents only sign their kids up because Mike coaches them. This is a HUGE disservice to those players. I emailed the Rec dept on 10/3 to ask about coaches, so I would know what age group to sign Ayden up for, to have Mike coach him. We responded back and forth and I knew what to do. Perhaps, at that time, there could have been the foresight to mention that they weren't allowing him to coach. But, not one mention. I had given Ayden various options for this winter: play for Bedford, play for Forest, he was invited to some other leagues. HE CHOSE Bedford so that he could: play for his dad, play with his schoolmates, and bring another championship to Bedford. Now, on November 12th, it is obviously too late to get him into anything else. We have given Ayden the choice to play this season if he wants. I've told him that this would be the very last time he participates in any Bedford Rec program. I will in no way support the Bedford Rec programs, other than getting through this season, if Ayden chooses to play. If Ayden is out there, know it is ONLY because he chose it. I will end with this: -There are coaches (yes, plural) for Bedford that are convicted felons. But, Mike can't coach. This should piss you all off. -Numbers continue to drop for kids signing up. But, you are losing your best coach. -Mike has probably about 15 yrs coaching experience (including B-team for LHS). -Yes, I am voicing my complaints directly to them as well. -Why was this decision made Nov 12th, which has made it IMPOSSIBLE for parents to choose another option for their players. -One of their employees told a parent of one of our players this past Saturday that Mike wasn't coaching. They told Mike today. Unprofessional. I am not posting this for comments, or the hateful messages I will get. I am posting because you all should know how this works. Bottom line-The kids who play basketball in Bedford are the ones that will be affected.
The Moneta park is located in a currently, sparsely populated area of the County, within relatively close proximity to Smith Mountain Lake and in an area of the County that will likely see a great deal of continued development and population growth in the near future. Located conveniently off of Route 122, Rucker Road, this park is situated on an amazing site with spectacular views. Less than 50 acres of the park’s approximately 119 acres have been developed and expectations are that much of this park site can remain in its natural state with a large open pasture and areas of woodland.
The initial phase of development of Moneta Park has been completed and includes:
- 2 multi-use ball fields (baseball, softball, soccer)
- Tee-ball field
- 1 football/soccer field
- 18 Hole Disc Gold Course
- Picnic shelter are in place and a restroom facility is nearing completion.
Future Expansion & Development
- A trail system is being developed within the park for walkers, hikers, mountain bikers and others. As funding permits, further development of the park will take place.
- Local foundations, civic clubs and citizens have generously donated a great amount of their time and money to the park’s development.
The late Smyth Meador and the James A. Meador Foundation were instrumental in the purchase and development of the park land and a memorial to him and recognition to other contributors is provided within the park.
