Bedford County Parks & Senior Programs

The Bedford County Parks and Recreation Department (BCPRD) along with our local partners will be offering various recreational and life enhancing programs for Bedford County's over 50 years of age residents. A diverse selection of educational classes will be offered and are designed to improve the quality of life for county residents over 50 years of age. The BCPRD encourages all residents to review what opportunities are available.

Senior Bingo

If you are 50 years or older and like to socialize and play Bingo, then this is the place for you. The Bedford County Parks and Recreation Department offers Bingo 3 times a month at 3 locations. Forest Recreation Center (2nd Tuesday), Moneta Rescue Squad (3rd Wednesday), and the Bedford Moose Lodge (4th Thursday). Lunch is served at all locations so come and bring your favorite dish to share.This program runs from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Cost is $1.00 per card with a limit of 4 cards per person. Silver Notes

Bedford County Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a Senior Choir group the “Silver Notes” If you are interested in joining the group please contact the Recreation Department at (540) 586-7682.

Line Dance Class

Bedford County Parks and Recreation line dance meets at the Recreation Office on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. If you are interested please call (540) 586-7682 for more information.

Oil Painting by the Bob Ross Method with Instructor Ed Gowen
Thursday, March 19

Forest Recreation Center

With the Bob Ross method of Oil Painting, you will complete each painting in just one class. Even people who have never painted before can do this although more experienced people will also enjoy the classes. Each painting is done on a 16x20 inch canvas (unless otherwise specified) using Bob Ross supplies. Students must supply own 16x20 inch canvas and paper towels, all other supplies included. Fee: $75.00 per person. Please call Stuart Saunders at (540) 586-7682 to register. All classes are held at the Forest Recreation Center.

Craft Class

Bedford County Parks and Recreation will hold monthly craft classes at the Parks and Recreation office located at 1257 County Farm Rd. in Bedford. Class will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12. Please call (540) 586-7682 to pre register. Participants must be registered by the Monday before class. Fee for the class is $5.00 per person per class.

Senior Walking Program
Bedford County Gym
2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Come join Bedford County Parks and Recreation for a Senior Walking Club. Participants will meet on Mondays at the County Gym (1059 Turning Point Rd. Bedford) and walk indoors at your own pace. This program is designed as a great way to improve overall health as well as a great way to make new friends. For more information please call (540) 586-7682.

Community Yard Sale

AARP Driver Safety Course
Wednesday, April 29

Bedford County Parks and Recreation office

Sponsored by AARP, the friendly and knowledgeable instructor will guide you through this course in a fun and casual atmosphere. Pre-registration is required by calling the Bedford County Parks and Recreation office at (540) 586-7682. Bring AARP card, drivers license, sweater an. Fee is $15.00 for AARP members and $20.00 for non members and is paid directly to instructor on first day of class.

Tai Chi for seniors
Tuesday’s and Thursday’s

Tai Chi promotes balance, flexibility, strength and focus for its practitioners. Classes for seniors  are every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Bedford County Recreation Department; 1257 County Farm Rd. This is a free program.

Matter of Balance
Monday’s and Wednesday's

Parks and Recreation Office

A Matter of Balance is a 16 hour course that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. The group will meet twice weekly for 4 weeks. This is a free class offered by the Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living.  Please call the Parks and Recreation office to pre register at 540-586-7682.

Senior Lounge - Programs Room

Come enjoy our new Senior Lounge and Program Room! Relax with a cup of coffee and read the newspaper or socialize with a friend while spending a little time in our senior lounge. We also have a program room with a pool table and table tennis for a little friendly competition. These spaces are open to the public during regular business hours Monday - Friday 8:30 a..m. - 5:00 p.m.
