Benefits

Feedback
Bedford County offers a range of benefits to employees - from low-cost, HSA health insurance to life insurance options. Learn a little bit about our benefits below.
Medical

Bedford County’s medical insurance program is administered by Anthem. We offer two plan options.

In addition to inpatient, outpatient, and major medical coverage, our plans include preventive care, prescriptions, and vision benefits. Members also have access to Anthem’s nationwide network and services like educational videos, web-based cost comparison tools, mobile apps and LiveHealth Online, which gives members 24-hour a day access to a physician.

Employees who are classified as full-time are eligible for Group Medical Coverage.

Dental

Bedford County’s dental insurance program is administered by Delta Dental. Employees have two plans to choose from.

Each plan covers two free routine oral exams and cleanings per year and scheduled x-rays as well as covering 80% of the allowable charges for other basic services after meeting a small deductible.

In addition, our "High" plan offers coverage for crowns, prosthodontics, dentures, bridges and orthodontic services. Employees who are classified as full-time are eligible for Group Dental Coverage.

Vision

Bedford County offers a vision insurance plan through Superior Vision. The coverage includes eye exams, frames, lenses, contact lens fitting, and contact lenses.

Health Savings Account (HSA)

Bedford County pairs high-deductible health insurance plans with a health savings account, and we make HSA contributions to those employees enrolled in the county’s high deductible health insurance plans.

The contributions are based on the health insurance plan the employee enrolls in, as well as the tier they select. Health Savings Accounts can be used to pay for qualified medical expenses.

Virginia Retirement System (VRS)

All full-time employees are enrolled automatically in VRS.

Members are required to contribute a mandatory 5% of their base salary into the VRS system. The County also contributes into the system for its eligible employees.

VRS has several plans that vary in retirement eligibility standards and benefits paid. The plan you are placed in depends on the nature of your job and when you become a VRS member.

Life Insurance

Employees holding full-time positions are automatically enrolled in Basic Group Life Insurance as a part of their Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefit. The benefit amount is equal to your annual base pay, rounded to the next highest thousand and then doubled.

The VRS group life administrator is Securian Financial. The County pays 100% of the cost of employee Basic Group Life coverage.

Optional Life Insurance

Eligible employees may purchase additional life insurance coverage (Optional Life) for themselves, their spouse, and their children in increments of 1 to 8 times their annual base pay. Employees must purchase Optional Life insurance on themselves in order to cover their spouse and children.

Employee Assistance Program

Our Employee Assistance Program is a free, confidential benefit that offers employees and their household family members counseling as well as information and resources on emotional, financial, legal, family, and work/life issues. This service is available 24/7, 365 days a year through Anthem.

457 Deferred Compensation Plans

Bedford County offers 457 Deferred Compensation plans to eligible employees to help them voluntarily save for their retirement.

Employees in full-time and part-time positions are eligible and can elect to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation plans at any time. Employees have the choice of two 457 Administrators: Commonwealth of VA and VALIC.

Voluntary Benefits

Bedford County offers supplemental voluntary insurance plans such as accident, cancer, critical illness, short-term disability and whole life insurance. Some of these benefits may be received on a pre-tax basis through payroll deduction.

Tuition Assistance

Bedford County values continuing education and considers it a vital part of employee development. All full-time employees with at least one year of service are eligible to apply. Eligible expenses include tuition, course fees and books.

The County will reimburse an employee 80% (up to $2,000 per fiscal year) of courses that are directly related to the employee’s current position. Courses that meet degree requirements will be reimbursed at 50% (up to $750 per fiscal year). Employees must complete the class with a “B” or higher to qualify for reimbursement.
