The Bedford County Animal Shelter provides boarding options to abandoned and stray animals. There are lots of adoptable animals including dogs/puppies, cats/kittens, and more.

In 2026, Bedford County celebrated the completion of a major expansion of the shelter, including 3,000 feet of additional kennel space and outdoor dog runs. Bedford County has created a special fund for members of the community who want to donate. Learn more in this news article.

Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter is a nonprofit organization that focuses on helping shelter animals get adopted in our community. Volunteers also improve the lives of animals in the shelter with their efforts.

Hours of Operation:

  • Sunday & Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday - Friday: 1 - 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • The Animal Shelter is closed on all state holidays.

Spay/Neuter Services

The Bedford County Animal Shelter recommends the following clinics for spay and neuter services:

  • Lynchburg Humane Spay/Neuter Clinic 
  • Bedford Humane Spay/Neuter Shuttle 
  • Angels of Assisi 
Animal Control Information

Animal Control officers enforce state and county ordinances regarding domestic animals. Animal Control provides services from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

To report a stray animal, call the Sheriff's Office at 540-586-7827.

Stray animals picked up by Animal Control officers are taken to the Bedford County Animal Shelter.
